The morning of Sunday 11th October saw over 16,000 runners descend upon London’s Hyde Park, ready and raring to start the Royal Parks Half Marathon 2015. The 13 mile (or 21 km) route, which featured Wellington Arch, Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square, promised to be a spectacular course for runners and spectators alike. The 9:00am hooter signalled the race’s commencement, although all runners were released in blocks according to their estimated completion time.
20 of the 16,000 present had kindly chosen to represent Findacure. Special mentions must go to Andrew Lomas, who ended up completing the course with his rucksack, and Kristina Kozusko, who, after reaching her fundraising target, agreed to run in fancy dress! Hana Ayoob and her dad Mark Tickner decided in advance to walk the course, while Natalie Hughes and her mum, Jo Galvin, did a mixture of walking and jogging – these were probably the most sensible members of the team!
Our fastest runners, who all completed the run in under 1:50, were Ali Robinson, Alex Millen and Conor Walsh. They were shortly followed by James Streather in 1:54 and Leigh McGarry, who just broke the two hour barrier in 1:59. Lizzie Scourfield and Elena Wilson both finished in an impressive time of 2:03, while Matt Davies, Katherine Thorogood and Florence Walker all ran through the line within 2:40. Our final three representatives were Mary McLaren, Thisyaka Dias and Ajay Johal. All of our runners performed amazingly and should be very proud of themselves.
Blessed by the beautiful weather, all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day – which was also a great fundraising success! The team have raised over £5,500 for Findacure so far. We would like to thank each and every individual for the hard work they put into their fundraising and training. Their efforts will allow us to continue our fantastic work with patients of rare diseases, and to develop new and exciting projects in the future.
