After much anticipation, the day finally arrived for Findacure’s first ever Gala Dinner! On Friday 23rd September, 60 people joined us at the Hilton Hotel in Cambridge to celebrate the fourth anniversary of our charity registration.
Following welcome drinks, the evening’s festivities began with an opening talk from Co-Founder and Chairman Nick Sireau. Nick shared with us his personal journey of having two children born with the rare genetic disease Alkaptonuria, and how the realisation of how little support there was available to rare disease patient groups led him to setting up Findacure. With everyone well and truly informed, the starters were served and everybody eagerly tucked in.
During dinner our keynote speaker, and Britain’s most successful Winter Paralympian, Jade Etherington gave an inspirational speech about her experience living with glaucoma and Axenfeld syndrome. Despite her rare condition, she refused to let anything get in the way of achieving her dream of skiing in the 2014 Winter Paralympic games. Jade’s inspirational and humorous speech moved everyone in the room, and she graciously brought along her Paralympic medals for everyone to see.
Next up came our raffle. In total, 13 prizes were on offer, with a 3 night trip to Prague, West End theatre tickets, a family photo shoot and a beginner’s bread making course being amongst the top accolades. The raffle was a huge success with almost 200 tickets sold, raising just under £1000! A huge thank you to everyone for taking part, big congratulations to our raffle prize winners and commiserations to the unlucky few…there’s always next time!
Following a delicious three-course meal, the evening’s entertainment began. Our live band, The Jazz Professors, took to the stage and wowed the crowd with some classic renditions of the jazz favourites. Our casino offered attendees the chance to win an introductory flying lesson by trying their hand at Roulette and Blackjack. It was a big hit among several of our guests, who could be found firmly placed at the tables for the rest of the night. Topping off the evening was our photo shoot, complete with silly props, for everyone to have fun and enjoy.
All in all the night was a huge success with big smiles evident on everyone’s face. We raised a fantastic £1,700, all of which will go towards helping us fund our important charitable projects. We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us on this memorable night and we hope to see you again!
