The Student Voice Prize

The Student Voice Prize
returns 5th October 2020!

We’re challenging medical students to once again #DareToThinkRare for the 7th annual Student Voice Prize essay competition!

What is The Student Voice Prize?

The Student Voice Prize is an annual, international essay competition that focuses on raising the profile of rare disease within the medical field, particularly with medical students, nurses and scientists who may have never come across rare diseases in their training.

Findacure and Medics4RareDiseases host the competition together and the winner gets published in The Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases!

Why Rare Disease?

Rare diseases affect approximately 350 million people worldwide and are some of the most difficult conditions to diagnose. Despite the large number of people affected around the world, little time is dedicated to rare disease training in medical school. It is why The Student Voice Prize challenges the doctors, nurses and scientists of tomorrow to think about rare disease today. After all with a lifetime risk of 1 in 17 in the UK, it’s not rare to come across them

Patient Group Pairing Scheme

What better way to welcome you into the rare disease community than through the Patient Group Pairing Scheme!

This is your chance to be paired with a rare disease patient group who will give you a first-hand account of what it is really like to live with a rare disease. You’ll learn about your group’s condition and patient experience in the hopes that their story helps you to craft a winning essay!

If you happen to be a representative of a patient group reading this, please follow the same link below to learn how you can potentially be paired with a 2020 student!

"The more you know about these conditions, the more you can help and that's really what being a doctor is all about."

"It was very educational process. Through taking part I was able to find out so much more about the area of rare diseases. It's definitely something I would encourage people to go into. If you find the right thing to talk about, it can be really fun."

"I would definitely recommend The Student Voice Prize essay competition. It was a really great way to explore something that is not really a part of mainstream medical education."

"I have really enjoyed the conference and writing the essay. I will definitely consider a future career centered on the study of rare diseases and that is definitely because of the opportunity that you have given me."

"Through this prize I really learnt so much about the resources available for treating rare disease patients."
